Chris Rock's new movie drew a lot of conclusions about black women that just are not true for soooo many of us. The absurdity of Rev. Sharpton criticizing black women for having weaves and perms and men having to pay for them is crazy when he has been putting the "creamy crack" on his hair for decades. If my honey wants to treat me to a trip to the wig store or the hair salon, what's the problem?
These women whose men can't touch their hair during lovemaking are not in real intimate relationships (my opinion) or they want to keep some sort of ridiculous illusion that perpetuate stereotypes that black women are uptight sexually. I know many women (I especially do in my business as an Image Consultant and Women's Ministry Leader for over 1,000 women) who if bold enough to sit in a chair for hours to have it done, or walk into a store and take the time to pick out a wig, don't have any problem with the men they are dating or married to knowing it, touching it, etc.
I have worn wigs and weaves on and off for twenty-five years; exclusively for the last nine. Why? It works for my lifestyle. When you have a wig or weave, swimming, steaming, working out (all those things that Andre Harrell spoke of in the movie) are possible with no hassles. The purpose for me is to be stylish and not have my husband waiting 2 hours after we leave the beach for me to do my hair in order to go to dinner. Although many of the changes we go through seem off the wall, my white friends are no less picky about their hair just maybe in different ways.
As a point of fact, white women were weaving way before it was openly marketed to the black community. Jose Eber, stylist to the stars for over 35 years, has been clipping tracks in his white clients' hair since at least 1976. My white friends marvel at how my own thick, kinky hair holds curls, doesn't need to be washed everyday because of oily buildup. Is the creamy crack that my white sisters use to keep a body wave or curl in theirs, any less harmful than what we use to straighten ours? My white friends and coworkers trip about their hair too, are constantly touching and swinging it, many like a "tick", as if it's some involuntary act. C'mon girls, you know its true. Y'all obsess over the streaks that aren't just in the right places or the curl being too tight. This is not a few, it is a lot. Give me a break Chris! Truth is we're all trippin' about something.
And those idiots in the barber shop! (sorry, I couldn't help myself) What the heck? Bragging about the freedom of sleeping with a white girl because you can touch her hair? What? First of all, could you have interviewed some brothers who spoke real English and not strictly Ebonics? And to add some validity, how about some brothers that we could believe are sleeping with anybody!
I was disappointed that the message of healthy hair, albeit natural, permed, weave, braids or wig, that we feel good about is "good hair". The fact that the opinions of a few limited, shallow or insecure women and some men from the bizarre planet "Clueless" were chosen to speak for the masses, has completely missed the mark. I hosted two sets of friends for this flick and honestly, would love to have Chris Rock write me a refund check with a bonus for sitting through it twice!
I want your opinions ladies, on the movie or how you feel about your hair, comment on my review, whatever. Let it all out, this is the place!
Smooches,
Vanessa

My Fave Five!
Ladies, ladies, ladies! I have missed you. ImagiNess has been engaged in a revamping and we attended our first public exhibition last week (The Maryland State Education Association's Annual Convention in Ocean City, MD)! Alot of work and alot of fun. Meeting so many fabulous women in a short period was a blast and so inspiring. You are wonderful, powerful, strong, and so funny. Thank you for sharing your lives with me. Let me tell you how profound it was for me to see so many of you who were in your 40's, 50's and beyond! You blew my 'fro back with your youthful, effervescent presence!
My niece and I are putting together family photos for albums we're producing for Christmas so I have been seeing pictures of myself from years before and strangely, I look younger now. Why, I wondered, especially since I was "smaller" then, flatter tummy, no back fat, etc! LOL. A few minutes of reflection brought at least five factors that you too, may find helpful.

My Fave Five
- 1. Lighten Up - Taking life and ourselves so seriously can wear on our face and our health. You've heard the sayings, pick one. "Don't sweat the small stuff", "Too blessed to be stressed", etc.
- 2. Give More and Spend Less - It is not unusual for us to make an impulse buy or even think we can't live without something we must buy only to regret it or not be interested in it later. Yet when we give from the heart to others it does something special to our insides.
- 3. Move - Get your cute little (or not so little) buns in gear. Take a walk, an exercise class, hit the ON Demand button of your cable remote and take a stretching, Pilate's, yoga or Funky Moves class for free in the privacy of your living room. When you exercise and sweat, you release endorphins, the "feel good" hormones. Your skin clears up, the ideas flow, some of our problems get resolutions, you name it. Its good for you. Don't forget to drink your water.
- 4. Forgive - We can find it difficult to forgive someone who hurt us especially if we were victimized, yet the unforgiveness destroys us not them. Talk to a friend, your pastor, family or a counselor. Find a way to move on, maybe not because they deserve it, but because you do!
- 5. Laugh - at yourself, a silly movie, your kids, your thighs. Remember that laughter is the music of the heart! Do it everyday!

The Glam Squad - Part 1 - Permanent Makeup
Hey Ladies,
I hope you are all having a great summer! How are those tips working out for you? Let me know. It's been a great summer for me so far. I'm having a blast. I've done a few long weekend getaways, instead of a one or two week vacation. It's been a wonderful way to get away with my husband, my family and my friends.
The beach is always my first option. This time of year makes me focus on good health, light, healthy eating (I said I think about it) and being active outdoors. I found great deals this summer from Speigel and Newport News on swimsuits with body shaping, slimming fabrics. I'm two shades darker and can't wait to get back at least once more before the summer says goodbye.
Well for the last few weeks, I have been busy working, traveling and visiting my Maintenance Team a.k.a. The Glam Squad. Now because I'm a bit of a glamour-puss, my Squad may be a little larger than some, not as large as others. However, periodic visits are extremely important in order to "maintain". So for the new or uninitiated, a Glam Squad could consist of, but is not limited to, the following:
Hair Stylist (barber, colorist)
Braider
Weaver
Nail Technician (Mani's and Pedi's)
Esthetician (waxing, facials, peels, lash extensions, etc.)
Massage Therapist (oh so very very, necessary)
Clinical Cosmetologist (permanent make up, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, etc.)
So now that we have an idea of some of the "services" we are having done, I'd like to share my latest round of visits with you. In the next couple of days, I will introduce you to my personal team, whom I trust implicitly. They are in a word, the BIZOMB! I'll do this in parts, so that you don't get bored. The titles will let you know what we're talking about.
Introducing, Ms. Debbie Ruperti, Licensed Clinical Cosmetologist, Hague Medi-Spa, Norfolk, Virginia 757-622-7500
Six years ago after having a long-desired breast reduction, I discovered my plastic surgeon had a Medi-Spa across the hall where they perform all sorts of pretty amazing, beauty enhancing procedures. One of the most fascinating (and I believe awesome), is the creation of an aerola after a mastectomy. The clinical cosmetologist can use permanent make up to create it (the darker circle part of the breast/nipple). There are women of course, who choose not to have this, they are just grateful to be alive but quite a lot of women actually do. Being fascinated by the whole industry, I had to investigate this permanent makeup option a little further. Twelve years ago I read an article in Allure, that described the procedure and results in great detail. It stuck with me as I had already noticed that my eyebrows weren't growing back as fast after waxing or as thick as they once were.
Enter Debbie. Warm personality and very patient as I asked a hundred questions about pain, botched results and correction, you name it. I loved that she wasn't trying to sell me, but inform me. Well, my investigation ended by me having my eyebrows done. Results? I loved them and six years later still do! To me eyebrows are so important as it relates to the face and the balance of it. They frame the eyes and can be the difference between so-so and even scary or fabulous. Unkempt brows, say, "unkempt" but a well-cared for brow says, "Pow"! Because I had been using brow pencil to fill in and extend, I no longer needed to do that nor worry about them sweating off during workouts, hot summer days or after a swim. So this summer, I needed a touch up. A touch up is required every 2-3 years to keep the color and shape. Not bad. The initial procedure which took about an hour was $250 and touch ups are $150. Sooooo worth it!
The method that my "magician" Debbie uses is called "soft tap". A topical anesthetic (cream) is used to numb the area first. While it's numbing you, Debbie discusses color options based on your hair color (natural or otherwise) and helps you pick out the color that you desire. I love that her treatment room has lots of bright, natural light so you can truly see what that color will look like. She does your perfect color and then records it so when you return for touch ups you can have the exact color. No recovery time. She sends you home with a tube of vaseline-like gel to apply for the next 3 days and that is it. No kidding.
The great thing is when I first had it done, I was wearing my hair brown with light brown and blond highlights. Now, I'm wearing a soft black with slightly red highlights. This time I wanted my brows a little darker than before. No problem! Debbie is a perfectionist and will work on your brows until they are exactly the shape and color you desire! She also does permanent eyeliner (upper and lower), lip liner, chemical peels and lash extensions are also available.
The staff at Hague Medi-Spa are fantastic. If you're considering a little or a lot of "nip tuck", or just a "freshening" I highly recommend the Hague Medi Spa. Tell 'em Vanessa sent you!

The Booty-Shaper Graveyard
Dear Anonymous,
I hear you girl. I have had this problem a few times I must say I have a booty-shaper graveyard to prove it. I hate to even hear myself say it but, we just have to try a few. It's like dating; sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs before you get a prince. Try this one and see what you think. I have it on today with a form-fitting skirt and I have no lines at all! And it's comfortable. I am a Misses Size 14 and hippy (translation: wide on the sides) LOL! and I am looking smoooth.
This Asset is not like the longer version (which I also like for different reasons). The other is almost made of an "opaque tights" material. This one is lycra-spandex/microfiber with a nice cotton crotch.
I wish you luck. Write us back and let us know; good, bad or indifferent, we want the scoop!

Great Summer Style
Well ladies! Summer's first official weekend being over, I thought I'd share a few summer style and beauty tips. Don't forget to share yours as well!
Summer Tip #1 is not only for summer - Wear garments that fit. I, like many of you am so ready to shed the bulky, heavier clothes of winter but let's be mindful of what we are shedding girls! The old saying, "less is more" is not always appropriate. If you have some dimples showing through your dress or light summer slacks, please consider a pair of briefs or a nice light short legged "booty smoother". My new fave is found at Target in the Lingerie department. It's by Assets by Sara Blakley (get it). It's short enough that I wore mine this weekend with a pair of short-shorts. Not to mention, it lifted me very nicely.
Summer Tip #2 – Sunscreen! No matter what your ethnicity or complexion, skin cancer is on the rise and it is preventable. There are good moisturizers that contain at least an SPF 15. I personally use one with SPF 45 (Neutrogena with helioplex*). As for those who don't like the grey, lavender or ashy look that many of the sunscreens leave on darker skin, try these two (our friends at Ebony have) Rx for Brown Skin Protect and Defend Sunscreen (sephora.com) and Fashion Fair Hidden Beauty Daytime Moisturizer (Macy's)
Summer Tip #3 - Please ladies keep up or start getting regular pedicures. You may need more than once a month if you spend time at the beach. The sand dries out the cuticles and can eat at the polish. Don't stop going to the beach, live life and buy the polish for in-between appointments. Also, a pumice stone should have a permanent spot in your shower. Just like we exfoliate other parts (which will remain nameless for this conversation) give those heels and balls of the feet a good rub or two every day to keep the smoothness. Also, make sure your salon is using sterilized tools and they are thoroughly cleaning the tub after every use. If they have an attitude when you ask, please take your business elsewhere. Salons should be proud of their policies regarding cleaning and sterilization. If they're not proud, they're probably not clean enough for us! Run!
Summer Tip #4 - "Jump in, the water's great”! Don't allow the heat and humidity or summer activities like swimming, ruin your summer do. Braids, weaves and wigs are all great ways to enjoy the summer and all its' glory without being chained to a blow dryer and curling iron. Me? Girls, I have two wigs (Insta-Weave type) for most of my styles. After my swim or power walk, I wash the salt, sweat or chlorine out of my own hair while in the shower, towel dry it, spritz on a good leave-in conditioner and put on the fresh one. Pow! Fabulous again in no time!

Welcome!
Okay, so everybody is doing this blog, log, facebook, myspace, twitter-ditter thing. So, I give in or give up (don't know which yet). I'm an Image Consultant. I own a fun company called ImagiNess Style! We help women express their best self with life coaching, wardrobe consulting, skin, makeup and hair consultations. It's a blast!
How did that happen? Well, with three successful careers as a Make Up Artist, Event Planner and Recruiter(sometimes all at once) and years of creating and conducting workshops and seminars to empower women, it became apparent that I had also become the unofficial or official (according to my devoted sisters and girlfriends) "Queen of Style", the Weave Queen, the Fashionista, you get the picture.
I eat, breathe and sometimes dream hair, makeup and fashion since I was about four. Once I "borrowed" my mother's Maybelline black Eye Pencil, lined my eyes, lips and anything else "lineable", used baby powder for eyeshadow and applied it on the school bus. This of course required a mandatory trip to the stinky girls bathroom for a rough paper towel and some cold water to remove it (yes on the delicate eye area). This is a no no women. One day I was late for the bus, missed my trip to the "Evidence Removal Chamber" and got caught. My mom had a fit (for real, I was 10) and I was hooked.
If there is a wig, weave, ta ta tape, undergarment, shoe, shadow, or applicator that creates a better look, feel, fit, I'm on it. I want to try it all and probably have or will soon.
Enough about me, we'll get to know each other along the way. Style is personal and not at all about the latest fashion trend. It is attitude, understanding oneself and being comfortable with that and then expressing it to the world. It's our language to the world. It's not just about clothes, hair and makeup either. It's the way we speak, the way we enter a room, our body language.
We're gonna have some fun discovering each other. I want your opinion, your new finds, what works, what doesn't; keep your girl informed. I can't be everywhere at once. If you've got advice, I wanna hear it. Keep your comments real but civil, after all, we are ladies, and we'll get along great. You don't have to agree with me; I love a challenge. That's how we grow. I'll introduce you to some fabulous women. I've got one who has a salon dedicated to nothing but getting your hindparts, side parts and ta tas smoothed down and lifted up! You'll learn that I am the "ta ta police" and I don't play about a good foundation (undergarments that is).
Gotta run. I've got two wigs to soak in a little Woolite and I'm packing for a trip. So many choices, so limited the room in my truck. Maybe I can combine the bag with shoes and sandals with my reading material? Hmmm. The weather could change, my mind will change and a girl needs options. I know you know what I mean. Don't front.
So,what's it gonna be? Long, lightly-layered wig 1B/33 , or the straight one with the great bangs, 1B? For the newly initiated, those number/letter combinations are hair colors for weaves, wigs and braiding hair. Let me know if you need a course. School is open! Anyway, I'll let you know what I chose and will post an occasional photo or two so you can get some guts and experiment. Gotta go, I'm gonna clean out my trunk so my husband won't notice my extra bag. Sshhh.
Smooches!
